My poster is supposed to show how the state of Israel was born from people being connected over a common religion and culture. The elements I decided to show are an olive tree, a book, and the words עם ישראל חי the tree growing from the book and the roots spelling out the phrase. The book that the tree is growing from is supposed to be a religious book. The tree is planted into the book like it would be planted into the earth. What role does Israel play in the Jewish world? Israel is the holy land described in the Torah as where God would send us after God took the Jews out of Egypt. Ever since, Israel as a concept has been a symbol of a place that the Jews are striving to live in. A fundamental part of Judaism is wanting a place for Jews in Israel. It is a principle that is very important in Jewish text. Israel is the place where the temple once stood, the place where we had the strongest connection to God than in any other place. I am trying to show how the state of Israel grew from a common culture. I drew a book because I always associated Judaism with books because religious books are how we keep track of our laws and stories. Without those, Judaism wouldn't have lasted as long as it has. The tree is supposed to represent how the Jewish people are like leaves, all with different beliefs, ideas and thoughts, but we are all connected at the trunk of the tree, which is Judaism. The tree is supported by the book, showing, again, the importance of books in Judaism. Below are the roots from the words עם ישראל חי. The roots are supposed to show how underneath the holy books the Jews have a huge cultural aspect. How all Jews have roots in Israel. The book "A selection from the poetry of Elizabeth Barrett Browning" heavily inspired me in this drawing. The book made me imagine books as plants of knowledge. That they become ripe after you read them and understanding the book is like harvesting the plant. This made me put that vision on paper. I made the drawing about Israel by showing how we harvest knowledge from the plant of knowledge, but it grows from the library that it was grown.
