Liam used an abstract star shape and vibrant blended colors to convey joy that his Grandma was visiting from Israel. Reese used a darker palette to create a Star of David and all of the recent birthdays appear within the points of the star. Nico took his time discerning a theme but ultimately decided to do an abstract blue piece that conveys the movement and relaxation of the Dead Sea. Eliana chose Moses as her main subject, emphasizing his importance to the Jewish people and their ties to Eretz Yisrael. Logan focused on the idea of hope, and included the 78, which appears as ‘87’ on her poster but is a blending of Roman numerals and Hebrew right-to-left direction. Abby created a whimsical pink version of the Israeli flag to celebrate its 78th birthday. Zoey created strong contrast design with white and black checkerboard, revealing an Israeli flag in the center and she included the date of the creation of the State of Israel in the upper left corner. Daniel portrayed the Dead Sea in red with people floating together. The young students see Israel through a lens of both history, family, and as a place they would like to visit. Israel today represents for them the roots of the past and the hope of the future. The themes the students wanted to convey were hope, pride, history, unity and connection to community and place. I am proud of all the students for their efforts, some approached art enthusiastically and others were more tentative, but in the end everyone participated in creating a diverse piece. The students viewed the Yom Ha’atzmaut posters from previous years, along with the students’ submissions from previous years. The designs with smaller squares seemed to make a big impression as that showed up in the students’ work. Students were very impressed with the other students’ work.
