Teachers Talk - Map of Israel & Syria

This “Map of the Land of Israel and Syria,” drawn by Pinchas HaLevi Horowitz from Jerusalem, is among the first maps of the Land of Israel published in Hebrew by Jews in the Yishuv. The map, titled in both German and Hebrew, features place names in Hebrew, English, Yiddish, and German, and depicts topographical features, biblical sites, the lands of the Twelve Tribes, and the Exodus route. The biblical borders are shown: north to Aleppo and the Euphrates, east to the Arabian desert and Moav, west to Cyprus, and south to the Mediterranean and Egypt. Verses from Isaiah about the Israelites’ return curve around a ship in the Mediterranean. At the bottom are images of Jerusalem’s Knesset Yisrael neighborhood, built in 1892. The map aimed to raise funds for the Yishuv’s Jewish community in Jerusalem, with Chief Rabbi Samuel Salant and Elia David-Rabinowitz Tumim listed as charity leaders.
