The goal of this activity is to have students to articulate what makes Shabbat special to them and to hear how others relate to their Shabbat. Through primary sources they will explore different aspects of Shabbat as marked in different communities, and then reflect on what resonates with them

Ask students in advance to bring something that represents what makes Shabbat special to them or is a highlight of their Shabbat (e.g., food, game, activity, song)
Split the students into groups of 4–5 and have them share with each other what they brought and why they chose that object
Hand out a few primary sources and have each group discuss what their objects have in common with the primary sources. They can also share if there is anything else they find compelling or resonant in the primary sources
Bring the class back together and have each group share something that came up in their group
Play charades or Pictionary based on the objects students brought and shared
