Step 1

Using the worksheet, listen to the 8 tracks from the National Library of Israel’s Music Collection and Sound Archive and try to guess:

  • What event or holiday is being celebrated or experienced?
  • What religious tradition or country of origin is the recording from?

Tip: Play the tracks more than once for the students to match the melody to the event. If needed, give them hints or a list of the answers so all they need to do is match the ritual to the recording

Step 2

Discuss the following questions:

  • Did the recording sound familiar? Were there parts you recognized and if so, how did that feel?
  • How did you choose your answers? What hints did you base your guesses on?
  • What do the recordings tell us about Jewish culture? What is the role and importance of music in Jewish tradition?
  • What traditional tunes and songs do you know? Where did you learn them and who taught you ?
  • Would you like to learn more about different traditions? How can you do so ?
